How to Set Up an ENTTEC ODE Art-Net Node with CueSync
Step-by-step setup for the ENTTEC ODE (Open DMX Ethernet) node with CueSync — the standard way to get DMX out of CueSync over a network.

Start With the Right Mental Model
CueSync's output stack is network-based. Every supported DMX output mechanism uses either Art-Net or sACN over Ethernet — it does not talk directly to USB-to-DMX adapters like the ENTTEC Open DMX USB. That means the right way to get DMX out of CueSync into physical fixtures is via a network node that converts Ethernet packets to XLR DMX.
The ENTTEC ODE (Open DMX Ethernet) is the entry-level 1-universe Art-Net/sACN-to-DMX node and the most common choice for mobile DJs and small clubs working with CueSync. Don't confuse it with the USB-based "Open DMX USB" — similar name, entirely different product, and only the ODE works with CueSync's network protocol stack.
Hardware You Need
- ENTTEC ODE MK3 (~$200) — 1 universe of Art-Net/sACN with a 5-pin XLR DMX output
- Gigabit Ethernet switch — any 5-port consumer switch works
- Ethernet cables — Cat5e or better, short runs between switch and ODE
- DMX XLR cable — 5-pin XLR from ODE to the first fixture
- 120-ohm DMX terminator — seals the end of the fixture chain
- Mac running CueSync — macOS 12+ at launch (Windows on roadmap)
Network Topology
The simplest topology has everything on one switch:

If you're also running Pioneer DJ Link from CDJs, they join the same switch — Art-Net, sACN, and Pioneer DJ Link coexist happily on different UDP ports.
Setup Walkthrough
- Power and connect the ODE. Plug the ODE into your Ethernet switch and its power adapter into mains power. The LEDs should come up within a few seconds.
- Network your Mac/PC. Plug your CueSync machine into the same switch via Ethernet. Wi-Fi is not reliable for live Art-Net/sACN traffic — use wired.
- Open CueSync → Settings → Protocols. Choose Art-Net (or sACN). Both work with the ODE.
- Discover the ODE. CueSync auto-discovers Art-Net nodes on the network. The ODE should appear in the device list with its IP and a suggested universe assignment.
- Assign a universe. Map CueSync's Universe 1 to the ODE. If you're running multiple ODEs, give each its own universe.
- Wire the fixtures. Run a 5-pin XLR from the ODE's DMX OUT to the first fixture's DMX IN, then daisy-chain through the rest of your fixtures.
- Terminate the chain. Attach a 120-ohm DMX terminator to the last fixture's DMX OUT jack. Unterminated chains cause flickering and dropouts.
- Add fixtures to the Routing Editor and test. Open CueSync's Routing Editor, add each fixture with its DMX start address and channel layout, then fire a test cue to verify output in the built-in DMX monitor.
- Save the venue profile. Save a Venue Profile so the entire rig configuration reloads in seconds on your next gig.
DMX Cabling Rules
Once data leaves the ODE it's standard DMX512 over XLR, and the usual rules apply:
- 5-pin XLR is the DMX standard. Many fixtures ship with 3-pin XLR connectors; use a 5-to-3 adapter cable where needed. Do not use a microphone cable — DMX has a different characteristic impedance.
- Keep total chain length under 300 feet. Spec allows longer, but short chains are more forgiving.
- Always terminate. 120-ohm terminator on the last fixture's DMX OUT. Unterminated chains flicker and drop.
- One chain, no branching. Don't split DMX lines with Y-cables. If you need to split, use an opto-isolated splitter.
When to Upgrade
The ODE is a great entry point. Upgrade when:
- You need 2+ universes → DMXking eDMX2 (2 universes), Chauvet Net-X II (2 universes), or multi-port nodes like Pathport Octo
- You need RDM for fixture discovery and configuration → Higher-end nodes offer Art-Net RDM
- You're at festival/tour scale → Managed switches with VLANs + multi-universe nodes on a dedicated show network

Common Issues
Flickering fixtures: check chain termination (120-ohm terminator on last fixture's DMX OUT) and ensure no branching or unshielded cabling.
Node not discovered: check that your Mac/PC and the ODE are on the same subnet. macOS and Windows firewalls can block Art-Net on UDP 6454 — allow CueSync through your firewall.
Dropouts under load: move off Wi-Fi to wired Ethernet, and run the lighting network separate from general office traffic if possible.
No lights after 32 fixtures: you've hit 1 universe (~512 channels). Add a second node or upgrade to a 2-universe product.
