DMX vs Art-Net vs sACN: Which Protocol for DJ Lighting?
Understanding the three main lighting protocols and when to use each one for DJ and live event lighting automation.
The Three Lighting Protocols
If you're setting up automated lighting for DJ events, you'll encounter three protocols: DMX512, Art-Net, and sACN (E1.31). Each has different strengths, and the right choice depends on your setup.
DMX512 — The Original
DMX512 is the granddaddy of lighting control. It's a serial protocol that runs over 5-pin XLR cables.
Pros: Universal support, simple cabling, proven reliability Cons: Limited to 512 channels per universe, requires physical cables, no networking
Best for: Small setups with fewer than ~30 fixtures in a single chain.
Art-Net — DMX Over IP
Art-Net sends DMX data over standard Ethernet networks. Multiple universes on one cable.
Pros: Multi-universe over Ethernet, widely supported, GrandMA native Cons: Uses broadcast/unicast UDP, can congest busy networks
Best for: Professional setups with multiple universes and GrandMA consoles.
sACN (E1.31) — The Modern Standard
sACN is the ANSI standard for streaming DMX data over IP. Uses multicast for efficient delivery.
Pros: Multicast (efficient), standards-based, priority levels for merging Cons: Slightly less universal than Art-Net in older equipment
Best for: Large-scale installations, touring rigs, and setups where multiple controllers need to merge.
Which Should You Use?
| Setup | Recommended Protocol | |-------|---------------------| | Small bar/club, <30 fixtures | DMX512 (direct USB adapter) | | Club with GrandMA console | Art-Net | | Festival/tour, multiple sources | sACN (multicast) | | Mixing CueSync + manual console | sACN (priority merge) or Art-Net | | Resolume + lighting | Art-Net (Resolume native) |
Using All Three with CueSync
CueSync includes Art-Net and sACN output in every edition — including the DJ Edition. You can output to multiple protocols simultaneously, so if your GrandMA3 expects Art-Net but your LED walls use sACN, CueSync handles both from a single configuration.
The DJ Edition supports up to 4 universes (Art-Net or sACN). Theatre and Ultimate editions are unlimited.
Download CueSync free and configure your protocol setup in the routing editor.
