How CueSync Works
AllWhat it's for — CueSync listens for something (a beat, a timecode frame, a MIDI note, your GO), decides a cue is due, and sends commands to the gear that runs the show. This page shows the whole path on one screen, defines the words the manual uses, says what is saved where, and ends with a checklist of every screen, menu, setting, trigger, action and protocol in the app, each linked to the page that explains it.

The bar above is the Production edition. Tabs carry live badges: counts (Cues, CuePads) and readouts such as connected over total on Network. The chip at the far left is the Working context chip, which narrows the bar to All, DJ or Theatre screens. It exists only on Production.

GUARDS licence, one live machine, DRY / REHEARSE+, Pre-Show Check, held outputs
Three things sit outside the picture:
- The pixel wall is CueSync's own RGB engine. A Pixel Wall action or a Pixels Look drives it. It has its own private output and is not in the Outputs list. See Pixel Wall.
- Companion devices (crew board, DJ live view, system monitor) show you the show; on the crew board a device can also call cue lights and leave notes, which wait for you to apply them. The only page that can fire anything is Deputy, and only the pads you publish to it. Nothing served to any of them can move your show clock, load a track or edit the show. See Show Companion.
- Studio is a cloud workspace where a show is designed before it reaches the show machine. It is not part of the desktop app. See Studio.
The words the manual uses
| Word | What it is | Where you make one |
|---|---|---|
| Input | Anything CueSync listens to: decks, local audio, Ableton Link, the internal beat clock, timecode, MIDI, incoming OSC, received DMX, and you. | Devices, Network, Settings → DJ Hardware, Timecode, MIDI & Sync, DMX Input |
| Trigger | The condition that makes a cue due. 18 kinds. Beat, Phrase, Timecode, MIDI, Manual (your GO) and so on. | Cue Editor; Show Editor inspector |
| Cue | A number and a name, one trigger, and a list of actions. In the cue stack the actions fire together, and a Wait action splits the list into steps. A DJ cue lives in the cue stack. A Theatre show cue sits at a timecode position on a Part's lane. Both are cues. | Cues, Show Editor |
| Action | One typed command for one protocol, aimed at one output or broadcast to all outputs of its protocol. 28 kinds you can add. | Add Action in the cue, pad or Look editor |
| Intent | A protocol-neutral instruction: "black out", "set console look 12", "strobe burst". CueSync works out the actions when it fires, from what is connected. 9 kinds. Full page: Intents and Actions. | Show Editor cue dialog, venue profiles, Auto Pilot profiles, Show Themes |
| Look | A named stage state in the Palette: one console cue, media clip, laser cue or pixel look, or a Bundle that fires several at once. A cue, pad or AutoPilot moment fires it with a Look action. | Palette |
| Scene | In the app this word means two other things: a row of Cue Pads fired together, and the middle level of Act.Scene.Cue in the Show Editor. It does not mean a Look. See Cues, Pads or Scenes?. | Cue Pads; Show Editor |
| Pad | A button in a Cue Pads bank. It has a name, colour, fire mode and one action. | Cue Pads |
| Output | One configured connection to one device or program: a protocol, a host and a port. Actions reach gear through outputs. | Network → Add Output |
| Venue profile | A saved rig for one room: its outputs, what it can do, how intents map to it, named-look bindings and an output policy. | Settings → Venues |
| Show file | The .cuesync file. Everything that belongs to the show. | File ▸ Save |
| Machine settings | Preferences kept on this computer, in your ~/.cuesync/ folder. | Settings |
The glossary has the rest: Glossary.
What is saved where
In the show file (.cuesync) | On this machine |
|---|---|
| Cues and cue groups, and each cue's Ready state | App settings: appearance, shortcuts, behaviour, advanced, updates |
| Cue Pad banks, pads, scene rows | MIDI and Stream Deck device choices, the DJ Hardware network interface |
| Palette Looks and their banks | Timecode devices (the LTC audio device, MTC ports) and the timecode output switches; DMX Input; audio devices |
| Theatre Parts, sections, output lanes, Show Control settings | The pixel wall's rig, ramps and choreography, and the Crowd settings |
| Auto Pilot profiles and the active profile, show programs | Venue profiles, one JSON file each in ~/.cuesync/venues/ |
| MIDI mappings (note or CC to action), custom OSC schemas | Console logins, stored securely on this machine, never in the show file, and sent only to the address they were saved for |
| The outputs list: name, protocol, host, port. No console logins. | Your licence, device registration and account |
| Prepared tracks, the local-audio queue, master audio | Recent files and your global pad templates |
| Per-show settings: the Pioneer device number, the Ableton Link switches, Auto Pilot options, and the timecode frame rate, source order, forced source, tolerance and venue timecode origin | Track phrase and marker corrections are authored here. The show carries a copy for its own tracks. |
| The active venue's id only. Not the profile. |
What travels when you move a show to another laptop, and what does not:
- A bare
.cuesyncbrings cues, pads, Looks, the outputs list and the venue id. It does not bring venue profiles, audio files, MIDI device choices, shortcuts or console logins. It also remembers which computer saved it: opened on another computer, its network outputs are held until you press Connect. - File ▸ Sync, Import & Export ▸ Export Tour Pack… writes a
.cuesynctourfile: the show plus your saved venue profiles. - Export Show Bundle… writes a
.cuesyncbundlezip: the show plus the audio files it references, with paths rewritten so the audio opens beside the show.
Three ways to run
Every edition connects to every protocol. The editions differ in which workflows are open.
| CueSync DJ | CueSync Theatre | CueSync Production | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What drives cues | Music: beat, phrase, energy, hot cues from decks or local audio; AutoPilot | A timeline and your GO: timecode, Manual, Follow and Auto trigger modes | Both, and either can run while the other waits |
| Screens you get | Home, Cues, CuePads, Palette, Track Prep, Track Program, Auto Pilot, Performance, Local Audio, Devices, Pro Decks, Network | Home, Show Editor, Run Mode, Timecode, Cues, CuePads, Palette, Devices, Network | All of them, plus the Working context chip |
| Trigger types open | 12 | 8 | 18 (Loudness Transition is Production only) |
| Venue profiles you can save | 3 | 25 | Unlimited |
| Generate Show, rekordbox XML | Yes | No | Yes |
| Suggest Cues, Generate Theatre Show | No | Yes | Yes |
| Timecode screen and Timecode trigger | No | Yes | Yes |
| Timecode output (MTC, LTC, Art-Net, TCNet) | Yes | Yes | Yes |
Settings, Diagnostics (when switched on) and the pad, Palette and cue-stack tools are in every edition. A screen your edition lacks is hidden from the navigation bar, and a gate overlay says which edition opens it.
Running both halves at once (Production). A Theatre show that is playing against timecode owns the console. While it plays, Auto Pilot stands down and the cue stack's Beat, Track Position and Scene Chain triggers hold back, so two engines never drive one desk. When the show stops they resume. A Cue Pad or a manual GO still fires while the show plays.
The safety layers
These are layers inside the software. None of them is a hardware interlock, and CueSync is not a safety system or a firing system: see Safety and Responsibility for what stays with you and what the rig does when something fails.
| Layer | What it does | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Blackout | Latches. Pauses Auto Pilot, holds the cue stack's automatic triggers, cancels running fades, releases tracked Looks, then sends every connected output its own blackout verb in parallel. A Theatre show that is loaded has its timecode triggers held too; GO still fires. | Transport ▸ Panic ▸ Blackout All Outputs · Cmd+Shift+B · the panic controls in the navigation bar · a Blackout All pad with no protocols picked |
| Freeze | Holds the current look. Auto Pilot pauses, automatic triggers hold, pads lock to Perform, the pixel wall holds its frame and running fades are cancelled. Outputs keep their last state. Manual GO and console control still work. | Transport ▸ Panic ▸ Freeze Outputs · Cmd+Shift+G |
| Manual Override | Stops Auto Pilot firing on its own and nothing else. The cue stack and pads stay live. | Transport ▸ Panic ▸ Manual Override · Cmd+Shift+M |
| Resume All | Clears all three states and re-arms Auto Pilot from the current position. Unfreeze Outputs and Release Manual Override lift only their own state; Auto Pilot comes back once nothing else is latched. | Transport ▸ Panic ▸ Resume All · Cmd+Shift+R |
| Esc | Backs out one step at a time. A latched Blackout is released first; Freeze and Manual Override are left alone. The last step resets the cue stack, which asks first when the stack has progress and sends nothing to the rig. | Main window |
| Pre-Show Check (called Flight Check on Home) | Validates the show against the rig: unreachable outputs, cues with nothing addressed, missing files, rig timing. | Transport ▸ Pre-Show Check… · Home |
| Ready state | Each cue and pad is Drafted, Tested or Ready. Editing a cue's behaviour can demote it. Run Mode's start gate lists the unready ones. It advises and never blocks. | Cues, Show Editor, Cue Pads (Test Fire) |
| DRY and REHEARSE+ | DRY advances cues and sends nothing. REHEARSE+ fires to exactly the same outputs as SHOW. | Run Mode and the Show Editor: SHOW / DRY / REHEARSE+, R cycles when stopped. Cues screen: the DRY toggle |
| Held outputs | A show saved on another computer, or one CueSync cannot confirm was saved here, opens with every output that reaches a network address off. A notice lists them with the address each would dial; Connect turns them on. MIDI outputs are not held. | The notice that opens with the show; Network |
| One live machine | A licence can be registered on more than one machine, but only one sends live output to the rig at a time. A spare in Standby refuses output to the rig and says so (a MIDI action reports success without sending). | See Installation |
| Read-Only licence | With no licence, no cue fires and no output connects. | See Installation |
| Honest sends | Every send reports success or failure where the transport can tell, and a failed cue is reported. A UDP output reporting green proves the packet left this machine, not that anything received it. | Protocol Reference |
| Room limits | A venue profile's output policy caps the level, sets a floor and caps strobe rate, enforced inside the DMX output. | Venue Profiles |
⚠ Blackout sends each protocol's own verb, and two have none. ETC Eos and ChamSys MagicQ have no blackout command CueSync can send, so a panic names them in a sticky red banner as not confirmed. TouchDesigner gets a /cuesync/panic pulse that only does something if you wired it. Releasing a Blackout restores a grandMA3's Grand Master to 100, Resolume's composition opacity and lifts Unreal's fade to black, and nothing else. Everything else is yours to re-fire.

Actions (28 you can add)
Add Action offers 28 types in four categories. A 29th, GrandMA3 Look (legacy), still loads and fires in older shows but is not offered when you add an action. Both numbers are right: Action Reference says 28 and What Each Action Can Send says 29. The field-by-field detail is in the Action Reference; each protocol has its own page.
| Category | Actions | Sends to |
|---|---|---|
| Lighting (10) | GrandMA3 · GrandMA3 Sequence level · GrandMA3 Sequence cue · GrandMA2 · ETC Eos · Avolites · ChamSys MagicQ · Art-Net · sACN · Pixel Wall | The named console or DMX output. Pixel Wall drives CueSync's own wall and needs no output. |
| Media (7) | Resolume · disguise · TouchDesigner · Unreal Engine · Pangolin Beyond · VIOSO · Pixera | The named media server, engine or laser |
| Show Control (5) | QLab · MIDI Show Control · Timecode Command · Cue Reference · Look | QLab, an MSC device, a console's timecode slot; Cue Reference and Look stay inside CueSync and resolve when they fire |
| Generic (6) | Generic OSC · Custom OSC · Fade (OSC ramp) · MIDI · Audio File · Wait | Any host and port, a custom device schema, a MIDI port, CueSync's audio engine. Wait is a delay between the actions of a cue. |
Every action except Generic OSC, Audio File, Cue Reference, Pixel Wall and Wait can be pinned to one output. Every one of those except Custom OSC can also be set to broadcast to every output of its protocol.
Triggers (18)
The Cue Editor groups them as Music-Reactive and Scripted / Manual. A cue whose trigger your edition lacks shows a gate indicator and says why it cannot fire.
| Group | Triggers | Editions |
|---|---|---|
| Music-Reactive (10) | Beat · Phrase · Phrase Change · BPM Range · Energy Level · Energy Transition · Fill · Key · Hot Cue Hit · Loudness Transition | DJ and Production. Beat is open to Theatre too. Loudness Transition is Production only. |
| Scripted / Manual (8) | Manual · MIDI · Track Position · Hotkey · Timecode · OSC Input · Scene Chain · DMX Input | Manual and MIDI: all. Track Position: DJ, Production. Hotkey, Timecode, OSC Input, Scene Chain, DMX Input: Theatre, Production. |
Full firing rules: Trigger Reference.
Protocols (20)
The table lists every output type. A protocol that speaks over two transports has a row for each (grandMA2, grandMA3, QLab), which is why other pages say 15 integrations. Every edition includes every protocol.
Run against the real program or software: grandMA3 (a physical console, and onPC), Resolume (a live Arena), QLab and Unreal Engine 5 (in the engine). Every other row is built to the manufacturer's published interface and has not been run on hardware.
| Protocol | Transport, default port | Read |

Use cases
1. Find out why a cue did nothing. Walk the path from the top.
- Trigger. Open Cues (
Cmd+2). The next cue is tagged NEXT. A cue that is not next is not being evaluated by a sequential trigger. Press the play icon on the cue's row to test-fire it, which ignores the trigger. If it fires now, the trigger was the problem. - Action. Open the cue and read each action's Sends: line where the editor shows one. It names the one thing that action sends.
- Output. Open Network (
Cmd+9). Every output you use should read connected. A UDP output that reads green has not proved anything arrived; open the desk's own command history. - Holds. Open Transport ▸ Panic. If the first row reads Release Blackout, a blackout is latched. Unfreeze Outputs and Release Manual Override mean the same for those two. Look at the DRY toggle in the Cues toolbar: it reads DRY RUN when on and sends nothing.
- Licence. Read the licence badge in the bar. Read-Only fires nothing. You should end on one line that failed: the trigger, the action, the output, a hold or the licence.
2. Move a show to a spare laptop.
- On the primary, choose File ▸ Sync, Import & Export ▸ Export Tour Pack… and save the file. Choose Export Show Bundle… as well if the show plays audio files.
- On the spare, choose Import Tour Pack… and pick the file. CueSync installs the venue profiles the spare does not already have (your edition's venue limit can block some), writes the show beside the pack file and opens it. For a bundle, choose Import Show Bundle…, then choose a folder to unpack it into. CueSync opens the unpacked show. A show from a pack or bundle always opens with its network outputs held: a notice lists them, each with the address it would dial. A venue installed from a pack is not switched on for you; the show offers Use venue.
- Open Settings → Venues and activate the venue (or press Use venue on the notice). Open Network and re-enter any console logins. They never travel in a show file.
- Quit CueSync on the primary, then press Connect on the held-outputs notice, or choose Output ▸ Activate All Outputs, on the spare. Press Connect only if the addresses it lists are the rig's. Only one machine per licence drives the rig. You should see every output connect on the spare. Until the primary quits, the spare is in Standby and refuses output to the rig.
3. Rehearse without sending anything.
- On the Cues screen, click DRY in the cue stack toolbar. It changes to DRY RUN with a warning icon.
- Press
Spaceto GO through the stack. Cues advance and the rows update. - For a Theatre show, open Run Mode and stop or pause the show. Press
Runtil the transport reads DRY. Press Play. - Confirm on the desk or server that nothing arrived. Switch back before doors:
Ragain, or click DRY RUN off. You should see cues fire on screen while every console and media server stays quiet. REHEARSE+ is different: it sends to the same outputs as SHOW.
Tips & gotchas
- One word, several meanings. Palette is the name of a screen. On Eos, Avolites and MagicQ a palette is a colour or position preset, and CueSync does not send or edit those. Scene is a row of pads or the middle of Act.Scene.Cue, never a Look. A console look number ("Set Console Look #3") is not a Look from the Palette. Pre-Show Check and Flight Check are the same dialog.
- The order of a stack matters. Sequential triggers evaluate only the next cue. A stalled cue blocks the ones below it. See Cues.
- Intent mappings are per intent type. A venue profile's mapping for "strobe burst" applies to every strobe-burst intent in the show, and a mapping guarded by a capability the venue lacks fires nothing. See Intents and Actions.
- Generate Show fixes its actions when you commit. It resolves its intents against the rig connected at that moment. Move to another venue and generate again.
- Scene Chain counts bars from beat events. It needs a beat source, and it is held while a Theatre show is playing.
- A protocol with no blackout verb is reported, not skipped. Read the red banner after any panic and black those desks out by hand.
What has been verified
Protocol status follows the Protocol Reference: four integrations have been run against the real program or hardware, the rest are built to the manufacturer's published interface and have not, and Art-Net and sACN are experimental. Do a dry run on your own rig before you rely on any of them.
